Don’t Waste Empathy On Trump Supporters

Calls for compassion and reconciliation with Trump supporters are misguided.

This is what I have been seeing on my Twitter timeline over the past few days…

And this.

These too…

Um, no. I am big fan of empathy and compassion but, as someone who has dealt with malignantly narcissistic people before, I’ve learned that it is sometimes not appropriate to empathize with people who have deliberately harmed you; all too often, warped people weaponize your ability to care about them. I’ve also learned that compassion fatigue is a very real thing. Consequently, it is important to treat your empathy as a not-easily replenished resource.

In short, don’t waste your empathy on Trump supporters.
