Last Saturday evening, I realized I had missed a phone call from my sister. I didn’t think too much of it until I realized that she had also sent me a text message not even two minutes earlier.

Hey Ebony call me.

Brusque and to the point — not at all like the text messages my sister usually sends me. Feeling panicked at the possibility of bad family news, I called my sister.

My sister told me that someone claiming to be a member of the Secret Service had called her regarding a threat that someone else claimed I made on Twitter. She also told me that Secret Service had gone to where I live!

I had been out for most of the day so I had no idea if anyone had shown up at my place of residence. Panicking, I asked my sister for the number where the call had come from. The number had a 718 area code — an area code for the outer boroughs of New York City. I got a busy signal the first three times I dialed it. Then I called the manager of my building. She confirmed that two men claiming to be members of the Secret Service had indeed come by.

Then I remembered the phone call I had gotten earlier that afternoon. The phone…
