I spend a lot of time on Twitter interacting with fellow Democrats. While we occasionally share jokes, snarky pop cultural commentary, and anecdotes about our personal lives, we spend most of our time wringing our hands over the upcoming 2020 presidential election. Or, more, accurately, we get into debates about “electability,” that intangible quality that some candidates have but others don’t.

Entirely too many people seem to think that Julián Castro lacks this quality especially in a face-off with Trump. However, Castro has several things going for him, things that would give him an edge in a contest with Trump.

He’s a Democrat. Multiple polls show Donald Trump losing to ANY Democrat. Due to his historic unpopularity, disastrous policies, and criminality (which is finally being investigated in the House), Trump’s chances of being reelected are…not good. Castro can best Trump simply because he belongs to the opposition party.

He’s a transformational candidate. Castro is only the second Latino who has ever sought the Democratic nomination for president. If Castro wins the nomination, he will be the first Latino to ever be the Democratic nominee. The historic nature of his candidacy will drive up turnout rates, especially among Latino voters, an increasingly powerful voting bloc within the Democratic Party.
