Seven 2020 Candidates Own Firearms. So Why is Kamala The Only One Getting Called Out?

When I checked my Twitter feed this morning, I saw this:

Not having previously known that Senator Harris was a gun-owner, I read the article. Then I re-read it. Then I re-read it yet another time to make sure that I understood it.

For anyone who doesn’t want to read the piece, I’ll simply summarize it. After opening with the statement that “presidential aspirant Kamala Harris has shot herself in the foot,” the author, Peter Funt (whose claim to fame is hosting the television show, Candid Camera), then goes on to tell us that an unnamed campaign aide told CNN that Ms. Harris was a gun owner who kept her gun locked. Funt also states that Harris “played to the heartland gathering by suggesting it is wise to own a handgun for protection simply because you’re afraid.”

What. The. Fuck.

Like many cis-het economically privileged white men of the Baby Boom generation, Funt seems to have a hard time appreciating just how differently women of color experience the world. No one seems to have told him that being a woman of color in a racist misogynistic country is a life-threatening proposition, regardless of how they choose to live their…
