The very first woman to be selected as a running mate for a major party presidential candidate dies of cancer.

In 1984, Geraldine Ferraro (right) was selected as a running mate for Democratic presidential candidate, Walter Mondale (left). She was the first woman selected for such a role on a major party ticket.
